Monitor Screen Is Black or Computer Does Not Go into Standby After Windows Media Player 7 Installation

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows Media Player version 7.0 on a Windows 2000-based computer, you may encounter one of the following symptoms:

  • The monitor screen appears black and has a white cursor in the left corner of the screen after Windows 2000 shuts down.
  • The computer hangs when you put it into Standby mode.


CAUSE

These issues can occur if you install the Adaptec compact disc recordable (CD-R) plug-in during the Windows Media Player version 7 installation procedure.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the Adaptec CD-R plug-in:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Windows Media Player 7, and then click Change/Remove.
  3. Specify Remove Windows Media Components, and then click Next.
  4. Click to select the Adaptec Plug-in check box, and then continue through the Windows Components Wizard.
  5. After the wizard process is complete, restart the computer.
