256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
SYMPTOMS
When a Pocket PC or Windows CE device establishes a connection with ActiveSync, any installed conversion utilities are unregistered in the Registry by ActiveSync 3.5.
Specifically, the following keys are removed:
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\DEVICE_ID\Filters\.ppt\InstalledFilters
HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\DEVICE_ID\Filters\.ppt
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by the following registry keys:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\Palm PC2\Filters\~.ppt
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\Palm PC2\Filters\.ppt\~InstalledFilters
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\PocketPC\Filters\~.ppt
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\PocketPC\Filters\.ppt\~InstalledFilters
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To prevent Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5 from removing any installed .ppt filters each time that a device is connected, remove the following keys from the registry:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\Palm PC2\Filters\~.ppt
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\Palm PC2\Filters\.ppt\~InstalledFilters
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\PocketPC\Filters\~.ppt
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SpecialDefaults\PocketPC\Filters\.ppt\~InstalledFilters
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Filters\.ppt
NOTE: After you remove these keys, you will need to re-install any third-party products that you use to display Powerpoint files on your Pocket PC. Please consult any documentation that may have been included with the product for instructions on how to do this.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a known issue within Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5. Please note that this does not apply to any other version of ActiveSync.
