256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you enable Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) support on an Intel PRO/100 Intelligent Server network adapter that is installed on a Windows 2000-based computer, network connectivity is lost. You may not be able to ping either the default gateway or the local host.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of a problem that Intel has found in the PRO/100 Intelligent Server network adapter. This problem prevents VLANs from working properly under Windows 2000.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, update the Intel driver for the network adapter, and then add a value in the registry for each network adapter that is configured for VLANs:

  1. Read the statement from Intel concerning this problem. You can read this statement at the following Intel Web site:
  2. Update the driver for the Intelligent Server network adapter by using the drivers that are contained in 100VW2K.exe. You can obtain this file at the following Intel Web site: The file installs both PROSet, which is an Intel utility that is used to configure the adapter, and the Ivlanw2k.sys drivers that are required to configure and use VLANs.
  3. Use the PROSet utility to configure the VLANs.
  4. After you update the driver and configure the VLANs, add a value in the registry for each network adapter that is configured for VLANs:
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate and click the following key in the registry

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iVLANProtocol\Parameters\Adapters\adapter id

where adapter id is a long string of letters and numbers.

    3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

         Value name: DontUseMulticastAll
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Binary
Value data: 1

    4. Quit Registry Editor.
  5. Restart the computer.
