This article was previously published under Q305963

SYMPTOMS

When you install Internet Explorer 6 in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive an error message that states that the Advanced Authoring component was not installed. If you resume the installation, or run Internet Explorer 6 Setup again, the same problem occurs.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if there was a problem in creating the uninstallation (or backup) data when you installed an earlier version of Internet Explorer. The uninstallation data for the Advanced Authoring component was created, but was not correctly registered.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the following file, and then run Internet Explorer Setup again:

Windows\System\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Advauth.cat

To delete this file, start Windows Explorer, open the Windows\System\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder on the drive on which Windows is installed, click the Advauth.cat file, and then press DELETE.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
