SYMPTOMS

On a Gateway Select 1100 computer, when you try to set the desktop area to a size that is larger than 640 x 480 pixels, the screen may go blank.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the basic input/output system (BIOS) that is installed on Gateway Select 1100 computers is not compatible with Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, obtain an updated BIOS from Gateway Inc.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
