"Invalid Line" Error Message When You Install Windows XP on Certain IBM ThinkPads or on IntelliStation

SYMPTOMS

While you are trying to install Windows XP on an IBM ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770X, or 770Z portable computer or on an IBM IntelliStation M Pro workstation, the following error message may appear:

Line 4879 of the INF file i386txtsetup.sif is invalid. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

The line number that is mentioned may vary.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the BIOS in the ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770X, and 770Z and in the IntelliStation M Pro cannot read certain large text files during the installation of Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, obtain an updated BIOS from IBM Corporation.
