SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you print or preview your Gantt chart, text in your chart is not wrapped correctly. Text is cut off when you print or preview your Gantt chart.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Microsoft Project incorrectly estimates the number of characters that the printer can print in a row or column. Microsoft Project may underestimate the number of characters that can fit on one line, and does not wrap the text. As a result, text is missing or cut off in the printed document.

This problem can occur when you create a variable row height to allow text to wrap to multiple lines. If you then format the text in which you created a variable row height, the text may not wrap when you preview your document.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain and install Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1). For additional information about how to obtain and install Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem in Microsoft Project 2000 (non-SR-1), use any of the following methods, as appropriate to your situation.

Method 1: Adjust Column Width

Adjust the width of the columns so that all text is visible. To do this, drag the column borders to the width that you want. Or, you can adjust the width of any column to match the length of the widest text contained in that column. To do this, double-click the right border of the column title. The column width is automatically resized to the width of the widest text in that column.

Method 2: Increase Row Height

Increase the height of the rows in your project. This causes the text to wrap so that all of the text is visible. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • To increase the height of one row, click the leftmost column heading (the Task ID field).
    • To increase the height of multiple rows, hold down CTRL and select the rows that you want.
    • To increase the height of all rows in your project, click the Select All button (the blank button at the upper-left corner of the Gantt Chart table).
  2. Drag the bottom margin of the row heading (the leftmost cell of the row) down your page. As you increase the height of the row(s), space is made available for the text to wrap.

Method 3: Remove All Custom Text Formatting

  1. Ensure that all tasks are visible in Gantt chart view. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Turn off AutoFilters (if AutoFilters are turned on). Point to Filtered for on the Project menu, and then click AutoFilter.
    2. On the Project menu, point to Filtered for, and then click All Tasks.
    3. Point to Outline on the Project menu, point to Show, and then click All Subtasks.
  2. Click the Select All button (the blank button at the upper-left corner of the Gantt chart table).
  3. On the Edit menu, point to Clear, and then click Formats to remove all custom cell formatting.
