SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Project Central Server or Microsoft Project 2000, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:

Internal Error 2381: Please contact product support for assistance.

-or-


Internal Error 2755: Please contact product support for assistance.

CAUSE

This behavior can be caused by either of the following conditions.

Cause 1

  • You are attempting to install Microsoft Project to a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer.


-and-

  • The hard disk that contains the Winnt folder, or the hard disk that you are installing Microsoft Project to, is formatted with the NTFS file system.


-and-

  • Incorrect NTFS file system permissions are set on the drive on which you are installing Microsoft Project.

Cause 2

The version of the Windows Installer on your computer is outdated or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the method appropriate to your situation.

Resolution for Cause 1: Assign Appropriate NTFS Permissions

Set the appropriate NTFS file system permissions on the installation drive (the drive on which you are installing the Microsoft Project folder) and for the Winnt\Installer folder, and then install Microsoft Project. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the drive on which you are installing Microsoft Project.
  2. Right-click the drive, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
  3. Click Permissions.
  4. Assign the following NTFS permissions to the drive:
    ComputerName\Administrators Full Control
    System Full Control
    Everyone Change
    Creator/Owner Full Control
  5. Click OK.
  6. In Windows Explorer, locate the Winnt\Installer folder.
  7. Right-click the folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
  8. Click Permissions.
  9. Assign the following minimum NTFS permissions to the folder:
    ComputerName\Administrators Full Control
    System Full Control
    Everyone Read & Execute, List, Read
  10. Click OK.
  11. Install Microsoft Project.

Resolution for Cause 2: Install the Latest Version of the Windows Installer

Download and install the latest version of the Windows Installer for Windows NT 4.0, restart your computer, and then install Microsoft Project. The Windows Installer version 1.2 redistributable file (Instmsiw.exe) for Windows NT 4.0 is available for download at the following Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site:
