SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft IDE controller driver always selects PIO for tape drives, and this behavior cannot be changed by a user or a program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name
   --------------------------------------------------
   21-Feb-2002 10:45 5.0.2195.49 86,704 Atapi.sys

STATUS

This behavior is by design. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

PIO requires the host (computer) to coordinate every input/output transaction. With DMA, devices can communicate directly to each other by using the controller, and this process requires less overhead than PIO. You can overcome this design limitation by applying the hotfix that is described in this article.
