SYMPTOMS
When you type a UNC path to a distributed file system (DFS) share where the domain name is different from the NetBIOS name, you receive an error message similar to the following:
CAUSE
The NetBIOS name of the domain is different from the Domain Name System (DNS) name.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

New Registry Value Required
To activate the fix for this issue, you must add and set a registry value. To do this manually, follow these steps.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
- Start the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
- Locate and select the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common
- On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then type AlternateParseDisplayNameMethod as the value name. Press ENTER.
- Double-click the value name.
- In the Value data box, type 1 and then click OK.
- Quit the Registry Editor.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, map a network drive directly to \\Dfs domain name\share name.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1.
