XCCC: You Receive "Operation Could Not Be Completed" Error Message or Contacts Disappear

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to add a contact in the Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging client, you may receive the following error message:

The operation could not be completed. Please try again later.

In addition, some of your Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging contacts may not be displayed in your contact list. This occurs intermittently; later, the contacts are displayed again.

This problem occurs only if Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and the Instant Messaging Service are installed on the same computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

You must apply this fix on all of the computers that are deployed in the environment that are running both Exchange 2000 and the Instant Messaging Service. After you apply the fix, you must disable and then re-enable each Instant Messaging user.
