Unsafe Removal Error Message for a DVD-ROM Drive When Your Computer Returns from Hibernate or Standby Mode

SYMPTOMS

When your computer returns from Hibernate or Standby mode and a CD-R media is in your drive, you may receive the following error message where the device is listed as a DVD-ROM drive:

You have unplugged or ejected a device without stopping it.

NOTE: To reproduce this problem, you may need to return your computer from Hibernate or Standby mode several times.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the ATAPI driver does not wait long enough for media detection with some slower drives.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
