Unexpected Detection of Communication Port from Add New Hardware Wizard in Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you first run the autodetect feature from the Add New Hardware Wizard, Device Manager displays a communication port that is not supposed to be detected. This happens on Sony PCG series computers.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, remove the device and then run the Add New Hardware Wizard again to reinstall it. To remove the device:

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
  3. In Device Manager, locate the Ports section.
  4. Highlight the device that you want to remove, right-click the device, and then click Remove.
