SYMPTOMS
If you configure your Terminal Services sessions so that idle sessions are ended (or reset) after a certain amount of time, and you use password-protected screen savers, a session does not end if the screen saver is active. Therefore, the user is not correctly logged off. This issue can cause the following problems:
- Distributed File System (DFS) drives cannot be mapped again.
- Roaming profiles are not unloaded or written back.
CAUSE
When the password-protected screensaver is active, Winlogon.exe reenters the screen saver after receiving the external reset event and does not run the logoff routine. Therefore, the session is "hard" reset after three minutes.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, disable password-protected screen savers, or configure your Terminal Services sessions not to reset idle connections.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
