SYMPTOMS

When you use Outlook 2001 for Mac with the Apple Macintosh Operating System (Mac OS) 9.1 and you use a hosts file to resolve the name of a Microsoft Exchange Server and then attempt to use Outlook 2001 for Mac with the Mac OS X Classic environment, the Classic session terminates without an error message. This behavior also occurs if you attempt to restart Outlook 2001 for Mac or any other Classic program.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following two methods to work around this behavior:

Method 1 - Booting in Macintosh OS Classic Mode

Use Outlook 2001 for Mac in the standard boot of Mac OS 9.1 or later instead of Mac OS X in cases where the local hosts file is necessary.

Method 2 - Altering the Hosts File

The Apple Computer Corporation has published information about this behavior in an AppleCare Knowledge Base document. This document recommends that you insert a blank line after the last entry in the hosts file.

For more information about this Mac OS X behavior, please view the following Apple Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

On an Apple Macintosh computer that is running Outlook 2001 for Mac, the local hosts file is used to provide name resolution to the Exchange Server by its network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) name, the domain name in which it resides, and its IP address on networks where all three elements are not provided.
