FIX: HTML Help Compiler May Not Compile Correctly on Japanese Windows

Article ID: 304412

Article Last Modified on 10/19/2005

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft HTML Help 1.32

This article was previously published under Q304412

SYMPTOMS

When you compile a Microsoft HTML Help project with Microsoft HTML Help Workshop for the Japanese language, you may receive numerous HHC4012 warnings during the compilation. The warning messages are similar to the following:

HHC4012: Warning: The string "HIDC_ASCII_XCHAN" in line 82 of the file "c:\myproject\HelpJPN\IDD_ASCII_LINK.txt" has not been mapped to a number.

If you use the Microsoft HTML Help application programming interface (API) to search the built Help file after you successfully compile the Help file and receive only HHC4012 warnings, you cannot find topics that use context-sensitive help.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a bug in the Microsoft HTML Help compiler that is included with the HTML Help Workshop. When you receive the HHC4012 warnings during compilation, context-sensitive strings are not translated to a number for the strings that are listed in the HHC4012 warnings. This causes context-sensitive searches to fail in the Help file.
