MORE INFORMATION
Both the Windows 98 and the Windows 2000 shut down processes behave differently. When Windows 98 shuts down, the operating system informs all process that are running that the operating system is shutting down, and the running processes have an opportunity to save their data. When Windows 2000 shuts down, it handles shutting down the processes that are running one at a time. As a result of the way Windows 2000 shuts down processes one at a time, a problem can occur when a running process, such as Microsoft Outlook, is shutdown before Microsoft Word has a chance to shutdown, or vice versa. To prevent against data loss in this scenario, the user is prompted with the Please close all Microsoft Office applications before shutting down the system dialog box that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
