SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) version 2.2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) as a new installation (not an upgrade), you can connect to the MMS server through a Web browser by using either of the following commands.
MMS Is Configured to Use the Default HTTP Port 80
http://your MMS server name
MMS Is Configured to Use the Non-Default HTTP Port XX
http://your MMS server name:XX
where XX is the port number where the HTTP service is configured in MMS.
Although you can connect to the default MMS Web page, when you click Active Compass to log on with Active Compass, the Web page closes unexpectedly. The following eventID 4097 entry appears in the Application logs:
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
As an alternative to using Active Compass, you may use the MMS Compass utility or the Remote Administration mode of Microsoft Terminal Services for Windows 2000.

246878 How to Configure a Compass Client to Log On to an MMS Server
The problem that is described in this article does not occur with MMS servers that were upgraded to MMS 2.2 SP1.
As an alternative to using the MMS Compass client, you can use Active Compass to connect to an MMS server for administrative or access purposes. Active Compass allows users to log on to the MMS server through the HTTP port and does not require that the Compass client be installed on the client computer.
