XCCC: Instant Messaging Clients Are Suddenly Logged Off and Cannot Immediately Reconnect

SYMPTOMS

While you are using the Exchange 2000 Server Instant Messaging client, a red "X" may be displayed over the Instant Messaging icon on the taskbar, which indicates that the session is logged off. After you attempt to log on to Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging again, you may receive the following error message:

Exchange Instant Messaging authentication failure. The person logged on to this computer does not have permission to use the specified e-mail address. Please supply an e-mail address and logon credentials for that address.

However, after some time passes, if you attempt to log on by using the same user name and password, you can log on successfully. This problem occurs only if Exchange 2000 Server and the Instant Messaging Service are installed on the same computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: Because of file dependencies, this update requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

You must apply this fix to all of the computers in the environment that are running both Exchange 2000 and the Instant Message Service. After you apply the fix, you must disable and then re-enable each Instant Messaging user.
