SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows XP Professional on a computer that has Microsoft Office 2000 Standard, Professional, Premium,or Small Business Edition (SBE) installed, you may receive the following error message when you try to start Microsoft Outlook 2000:
When you try to configure Outlook 2000, you receive a request to insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, remove and then reinstall Outlook 2000 by either of the following methods:
By Using Utilities
- Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your products installation.
For additional information about how to download, install, and use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:290301 Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
- Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
- Click OK, and then click Exit.
Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder it was originally installed in to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.
- Insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM in the drive, and then follow the installation instructions.
- Restart the computer, and then start and configure Outlook.

You may receive the same error message when you upgrade from Windows 95 with Office 2000 Premium to Windows 2000. When Outlook 2000 starts after the upgrade, the error message appears even though there is no SBE on the computer. You may need to perform the following steps as a workaround:
- On the computer with Windows 95 and Office 2000, uninstall Office with the command line: msiexec /x {Product Code of the Office SKU}
- Upgrade to Windows 2000.
- Install Office 2000 or standalone version of Outlook.
