SYMPTOMS
An administrator cannot hide the Properties command for My Computer or the My Documents folder on Windows 2000-based client computers.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

After you install the fix that is included in this article on a Windows 2000-based client computer, you can set a registry value to prevent the Properties command for My Computer or the My Documents folder from being displayed. To do so, use the appropriate method.
Disable the Properties Command for the Current User
To disable the Properties command for My Computer or the My Documents folder for the current user that is logged on to a Windows 2000-based client computer:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add one or both of the following registry values:
Value name: NoPropertiesMyComputer
Data type: DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: 1Value name: NoPropertiesMyDocuments
Data type: DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: 1 - Quit Registry Editor.
Disable the Properties Command for All Users
To disable the Properties command for My Computer or the My Documents folder for all users that log on to a Windows 2000-based client computer:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add one or both of the following registry values:
Value name: NoPropertiesMyComputer
Data type: DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: 1Value name: NoPropertiesMyDocuments
Data type: DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: 1 - Quit Registry Editor.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
