SYMPTOMS

When you use a wizard to link to a database in any of the programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section, the Next button may be unavailable (dimmed).

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the Jet Database components are corrupted or are not the correct version.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, update to the latest Jet Database components. These components are included in the latest Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) service pack (SP). To do this, follow the steps that are appropriate to your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

Download and install the latest MDAC service pack. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click the appropriate link to download the latest version of MDAC for your operating system. Select the language version of your operating system, such as English, and then click Download.
  3. In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  4. In the Save As dialog box, click Desktop in the Save in box, and then click Save.

Note The file name that is listed should be Mdac_typ.exe.
  5. When the download process is completed, click Close, and then disconnect from the Internet.
  6. Quit all the programs that are running in the background.

To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
    2. Select each program that you want to quit.
    3. Click the End Task button to quit every program and task except Explorer and Systray (these are components of Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition (Me)).
    4. Repeat steps b and c until you have quit all unnecessary tasks.
  7. On the desktop, double-click Mdac_typ.exe, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  8. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP

Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later and Windows XP should have MDAC files that are later than those that are required by the programs listed in the "Applies to" section. New MDAC updates are frequently released and may be updated from the Microsoft Web site that is mentioned in step 1 of this section.
