SYMPTOMS
If you run a command such as dir /x to display a short name on a CD-ROM drive, you may see that the length of the short name is more than eight characters with a three-letter extension (8.3).
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the first four charactors of the file name use the double-byte character set (DBCS).
RESOLUTION
Windows 2000

This problem was corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
