SYMPTOMS

When you are browsing a Distributed File System (DFS) root by using Windows Explorer, if you select the Properties dialog box for one of the junction points, the Security tab may not be displayed.

This behavior occurs only if the name of the server that hosts the DFS junction point that you are viewing is configured with its Domain Name System (DNS) fully qualified domain name (FQDN) instead of its NetBIOS name.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the buffer for the computer name is too short for the full DNS computer name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: Install this hot fix on the client, not on the server.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
