ACC2000: Error When You Click a Command on the Office Links Menu

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

On the Tools menu, you can point to Office Links, and then click Merge it with Microsoft Word, Publish it with Microsoft Word, or Analyze it with Microsoft Excel. When you click one of these commands, you receive one or more of the following error messages

When you click Publish it with Microsoft Word or Analyze it with Microsoft Excel:

Microsoft Access can't start the OLE server.

followed by:

You tried to use a form, report, or datasheet that contains an OLE object, but the OLE server (the application used to create the object) may not be registered properly. Reinstall the OLE server to register it correctly.

When you click Merge it with Microsoft Word:

ActiveX component can't create object.

This error occurs regardless of whether the merge was set to a new or to an existing document.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you clicked the Not Available option for Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel when you installed Microsoft Office.

RESOLUTION

Rerun Office Setup, and configure your installation so that Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel is set to anything other than Not Available.

To rerun Microsoft Office Setup, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.
2. Select your Microsoft Office installation from the list, and click Change or Add/Remove, depending on your operating system.
3. In the Maintenance Mode box, click Add or Remove Features.
4. If you are trying to Merge it with Microsoft Word or Publish it with Microsoft Word, click the down arrow in the Microsoft Word branch and ensure that anything other than Not Available or Installed on First Use is selected. If you are trying to Analyze it with Microsoft Excel, click the down arrow in the Microsoft Excel branch and ensure that anything other than Not Available or Installed on First Use is selected.
5. Finish the installation by clicking Update Now.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

1. Install Microsoft Office, and perform a custom installation. Click Run all from My Computer for Microsoft Access, and click Not Available for Microsoft Word.
2. Open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
3. Click the Employees table, point to Office Links on the Tools menu, and then click Publish it with Microsoft Word.
4. Note that you receive one of the error messages that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
