SYMPTOMS

You may receive one of the following error messages when you try to start the Small Business Server (SBS) management console.

SBS 4.5:

HTTP Error 403
403.6 Forbidden IP address rejected.

SBS 4.0 or 4.0a:

Error: Access is Denied

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Microsoft Internet Explorer on SBS is configured to use a proxy server, but not to bypass the proxy server for local addresses.

By default, the SBS management console can be accessed only from the loopback address (127.0.0.1). The console is started by using the "LOCALHOST" loopback address host name as part of the Web address (or URL). If Internet Explorer is not configured to bypass the proxy server for local addresses, the request for the local resource is routed through the proxy server to the local Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) server. IIS refuses access to the console because the request does not come from the loopback address.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure Internet Explorer on SBS to use the proxy server for Web access, but to bypass the proxy server for local addresses.

Internet Explorer 5, 5.5, and 6

  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Connections tab.
  4. Click LAN Settings.
  5. Click to select the Bypass proxy server for local address. check box.
  6. Click OK, and then click OK.

Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Internet, and then click the Connection tab.
  3. Click to select the Bypass proxy server for local (Intranet) addresses check box.
  4. Click OK.
