SYMPTOMS

Under extremely high I/O volume on very fast multiple-CPU systems, SQL Server may not be able to process I/O as quickly as the underlying system. In addition, thread switching may also lead to high CPU utilization.

CAUSE

There is a single reader thread for network I/O.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

For SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1, multiple network readers are implemented that directly interface with VIA, which reduces thread switching and IPC.
