SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Windows, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Fatal error: Could not create socket

You may also be unable to browse the Internet.

CAUSE

This issue may occur in the following situation:

  • You install NetSonic Internet Accelerator (Web accelerator).

    -and-

  • You attempt to uninstall the Web accelerator program or you reinstall Windows without first removing the Web accelerator program.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Reinstall and Uninstall NetSonic Internet Accelerator

  1. Install NetSonic Internet Accelerator.
  2. Uninstall NetSonic Internet Accelerator:
    1. On the taskbar, click Start, then point to Programs, then point to NetSonic, and then click Uninstall NetSonic.
    2. Click Continue Uninstall, click OK, and then click Finish.
    3. Click OK to restart the computer.

Method 2: Remove NetSonic Internet Accelerator from Startup Group

  1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. In System Configuration Utility, on the Startup tab, click to clear all check boxes that are related to the NetSonic Internet Accelerator program. For example:

    eZulaMain
    msbb
    Gator
    NetSonic

  4. Click Apply, click OK, and then click Yes to restart the computer.

A Web accelerator program attempts to speed Internet access by storing recently used Web page information on the local hard disk. When you next click a link to visit that page, the locally stored information is used instead of reloading the page from the remote Web server.
