SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive an error message similar to one of the following:

SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module SUWIN.EXE

-or-

A mismatched Setupx.dll is loaded.
Setup cannot continue. Quit all Windows and MS-DOS based programs and try again.
Or quit Windows and run from an MS-DOS command prompt.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you attempt to upgrade to Windows Me from within any of the following operating systems, and the Setupx.dll or Suwin.exe files are damaged:

  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 95


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, run Windows Me Setup from a command prompt:

  1. Copy the Windows Me installation files to a folder on the hard disk:
    1. Start Windows Explorer, and then expand the drive that contains your Windows Me compact disc (CD).
    2. Open the Win9x folder.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Select All to select all of the files and folders.
    4. Click on the Edit menu option and choose Copy.
    5. Right-click the local hard drive (which is C by default), and then open the Windows folder.
    6. Open Options folder. If the folder does not exist, create a new folder called "Options" and then open this folder.
    7. Right-click the Install folder. If the folder does not exist, create a new folder called "Install". On the shortcut menu that appears, click Paste to paste the contents of the WIN9X folder to the local drive.

  2. Insert a Windows Startup disk and restart your computer to a command prompt.
  3. At the command prompt, type c:, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type CD\Windows\Options\Install, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type Setup, and then press ENTER. Windows Me Setup starts.
  6. Follow the prompts to start Windows Millennium Edition Setup.
