SYMPTOMS

When you try to access network shares by using the Windows Preinstall environment, your computer may stop responding (hang) or you may receive the following error message:

System Error 59 has occurred
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Windows Preinstall environment cannot access distributed file system (Dfs) shares.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
