SYMPTOMS
Automatic association of mailboxes with accounts in external domains may return a security identifier (SID) that is already being used in the forest, which may result in a merged mailbox. This problem may also occur with a manual association.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the search of Active Directory is based on logon ID.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
MORE INFORMATION
The Migration Wizard that is included with Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) searches the Active Directory forest for the SID in sidHistory and msExchMasterAccountSid and retrieves the SID of the matched account in the external domain. The association is not allowed if the SID is already being used by another account in the forest.
