SYMPTOMS
When you create a new catalog and the Site Server Administrative Access account is not member of the local Administrators group, the propagation of the catalog always creates an empty catalog on the search host.
CAUSE
The Administrative Access account is used to store the Search host's list entries in the following hive:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Site Server\3.0\Search\Indexer\Catalogname\DsList
By default, however, only the local Administrators group has sufficient registry permissions on that hive.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
The Site Server Search documentation states that the Administrative Access account must be in at least one of the following groups:
- Administrators on the local host
- SiteServer Search Administrators
- SiteServer Knowledge Administrators
- SiteServer Administrators
To allow the other groups to create catalogs, use regedt32 to change the access permissions on the following hive and give these groups the appropriate rights:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Site Server\3.0\Search\Indexer
To change the permissions, follow these steps:
- Start regedt32.
- Open the following hive:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Site Server\3.0\Search\Indexer
- Make sure that the Indexer key is selected, then click Security on the Regedt32 menu and click Permissions.
- In the Permissions Indexer dialog box, add the following local groups and grant them the Full Control right:
- SiteServer Search Administrators
- SiteServer Knowledge Administrators
- SiteServer Administrators
- Click OK, then quit Regedt32.
- Open the Catalog Build Server snap-in and select the affected catalog.
- Select Properties and click the Propagation tab.
- Select the Search Server hosts and click Apply.
- Propagate the catalog again.
WORKAROUND
Add the Site Server Search Administrative Access account to the local Administrators group.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
