XADM: User Accounts and Mailboxes Created with Active Directory Users and Computers Are Not Available for Logon

Article ID: 298809

Article Last Modified on 2/27/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q298809

SYMPTOMS

When you create new user accounts in Active Directory by using the Collaborative Data Objects (CDO) Systems Management library, the users may not be able to log on to their mailboxes for a while until the Replication Update Service (RUS) had processed the mailboxes.

This also affects mailboxes that are created by a migration process and causes the migration to fail because the migration tool tries to log on to the mailboxes.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because after you create an account either by means of Active Directory Users and Computers or by means of a mail migration tool, the msExchUserAccountControl attribute is not set until the RUS runs and stamps SMTP addresses and sets that bit. The time RUS takes to run depends on Active Directory latency.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

  1. Wait for RUS to run or try to force RUS to run in Exchange System Manager by right-clicking the Recipient Update Service object and then clicking Update Now. You can find the Recipient Update Service object under the Recipients container, then finally under the Recipient Update Services container.
  2. For a migration case, run a two-step migration; that way there will be time enough to allow the attribute to be stamped. Otherwise, the migration will fail.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
