SUMMARY
This step-by-step article describes how to add a local printer in Windows 2000. Although Windows automatically detects and installs most printers, there may be some printers that you cannot install by using Plug and Play. The procedure in this article describes how to install a printer by using the Add Printer Wizard.

Install a Local Printer in Windows 2000
- Log on to the computer as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
NOTE: If you add a Plug and Play printer, you do not have to log on to the computer with administrative credentials. However, to add a non-Plug and Play printer, you must log on to the computer as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
- Connect the printer cable to the appropriate port on your computer.
For more information about how to do this, see the documentation that is included with the printer, or contact the printer manufacturer.
- Plug the power cord of the printer into a wall outlet, and then turn the printer on.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Double-click Add Printer.
The Add Printer Wizard starts. Click Next.
- On the Local or Network Printer page, click Local printer, click to clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box, and then click Next.
- On the Select the Printer Port page, click Use the following port, click the port to which the printer is connected (for example, LPT1), and then click Next.
- On the Add Printer Wizard page, click the manufacturer of your printer under Manufacturers, click the model of your printer under Printers, and then click Next.
NOTE: If your printer does not appear in the Printers list, you must provide a printer driver from the manufacturer or select a similar printer from the list. A similar printer is one whose driver is compatible with your printer.
- On the Name Your Printer page, accept the name that appears, or type the name that you want in the Printer name box. Specify whether you want to use this printer as your default printer, and then click Next.
- On the Printer Sharing page, specify whether you want to share the printer, and then click Next.
- If you shared the printer in step 10, the Location and Comment page appears. Type the information that you want in the Location and Comment boxes.
This information helps users determine whether the printer device fits their needs. Click Next.
- On the Print Test Page page, specify whether you want to print a test page, and then click Next.
- On the Completing the Add Printer Wizard page, confirm the options that you selected, and then click Finish.
Windows installs the printer and creates an icon for the printer in the Printers folder.
