"Msgsrv32 Has Caused an Error in Mmsystem.dll" Error Message and Your Computer Hangs When You Start It

SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer after you install Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive the following error message on a blue screen, and your computer may stop responding (hang):

msgsrv32 has caused an error in mmsystem.dll

If you start your computer in Safe mode, your computer may display a blank desktop without any icons or taskbar.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Setupx.dll file is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click Start, click Search, and then click For Files and Folders.
  2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type setupx.dll, click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box, and then press ENTER.
  3. Right-click the Setupx.dll file, click Rename, type setupx.old, and then press ENTER.
