SYMPTOMS

When a user attempts to send a plain-text message to an external Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) or Internet mail recipient by using Microsoft Outlook 2000 or Microsoft Outlook 2002 with the Exchange Server information service in the profile, the message may be received as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

Additionally, in Exchange System Manager, in the Internet Message Formats properties, on the Message Formats tab, the message encoding is set to Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), or Provide body as HTML, or both. On the Advanced tab, Exchange rich-text format is set as Determined by individual user settings.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, send the message by using Microsoft Outlook Express or send the message by using Microsoft Outlook with the Internet Mail information service in the profile.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.

Fixed in Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), build 6.0.4479 of Phatcat.dll.
