SYMPTOMS

When you are using Dcpromo.exe to demote a domain controller, the Lsass.exe process may stop responding (hang), and you may experience one or more of the symptoms that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

CAUSE

This problem can be caused if a buffer overrun occurs during the hand off of FSMO roles. Note that this can occur even though all FSMO roles may have been transferred to other domain controllers.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
