This article explains how to install Office XP so that you also get the Windows Desktop Update and Windows Installer shortcuts with a single restart.

The Windows Installer offers the ability to install Office programs on demand (advertising), as well as the automatic repair of Office programs whenever critical files are deleted. However, the Windows Desktop Update must be installed in order for these features of the Windows Installer to work. Even if you install the Windows Desktop Update after you install Office, you cannot take advantage of these two Windows Installer features. This is because you would not have Windows Installer shortcuts for your Office programs. To have Windows Installer shortcuts created when you install Office, the Windows Desktop Update must be installed first.

NOTE: Windows Installer shortcuts are automatically supported on Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and Microsoft Windows 2000. They are only supported on installations of Microsoft Window NT 4.0 that have an updated version of the Windows shell (Windows Desktop Update) installed. This updated shell is included with later versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, and it can be added to existing installations of the operating systems.

Depending on your deployment scenario, use the appropriate steps to install Office XP and the Windows Desktop Update in a single installation.

If You Are Installing System Files Update and Updating To Internet Explorer 5.01 Included With Office XP

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 is installed by default as part of the System Files Update, if Internet Explorer 5.01 or later is not installed.

If your Windows NT 4.0 workstations require the System Files Update and you are installing Internet Explorer 5.01 with Office XP, follow these steps:

  1. Install the Tools from the Office XP Resource Kit.
  2. Start the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).
  3. In the Open the MSI File dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the Open dialog box, locate and select Osp.msi from the \Files\OSP\1033 folder on an Office XP administrative installation. Click Open.
  5. Click Next in the Open the MSI File dialog box.
  6. In the Open the MST dialog box, select Create a new MST file, and then click Next.
  7. In the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box, select Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, and then click Next.
  8. In the Modify Setup Properties dialog box, double-click InstallDesktopUpdate.
  9. In the Modify Property Value dialog box, select Install the Windows Desktop Update in the Value list, and then click OK.
  10. In the Modify Setup Properties dialog box, click Finish.
  11. Using a text editor like Notepad, open Setup.ini from your Office XP administrative installation.

  12. In the [SystemPackOptions] section of the Setup.ini, add a line similar to the following:

    Transforms=\\server\share\OfficeXP\Custom.mst

    NOTE: Modify this path to the transform that you created in steps 1 through 10.

  13. Save your customized Setup.ini as DUSetup.ini, and then close Notepad.

    NOTE: You can use any name for your customized Setup.ini file.

  14. Run Setup for Office with a command line similar to:

    \\server\share\OfficeXP\Setup.exe /settings
 \\server\share\OfficeXP\Files\Setup\DUSetup.ini /qb

    NOTE: The /qb switch combination is not required. It is only recommended because it prevents any customizations from being made during the Office installation.

If You Are Installing System Files Update, and Internet Explorer 5.01 or Later Is Already Installed

If your Windows NT 4.0 workstations already have Internet Explorer 5.01 or later, but the workstations require the System Files Update, follow these steps:

  1. Install the Tools from the Office XP Resource Kit.
  2. Start the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).
  3. In the Open the MSI File dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the Open dialog box, locate and select Osp.msi from the \Files\OSP\1033 folder on an Office XP administrative installation. Click Open.
  5. Click Next in the Open the MSI File dialog box.
  6. In the Open the MST dialog box, select Create a new MST file, and then click Next.
  7. In the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box, select Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, and then select Minimum in the Internet Explorer 5 upgrade mode list.NOTE: Even though you already have Internet Explorer 5.01 or later installed, it is necessary to select Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5 in this context in order to install the Windows Desktop Update. Selecting this option does not downgrade your version of Internet Explorer.

  8. Click Next.
  9. In the Modify Setup Properties dialog box, double-click InstallDesktopUpdate.
  10. In the Modify Property Value dialog box, select Install the Windows Desktop Update in the Value list, and then click OK.
  11. In the Modify Setup Properties dialog box, click Finish.
  12. Using a text editor like Notepad, open Setup.ini from your Office XP administrative installation.

If System Files Update and Internet Explorer 5.01 or Later Are Already Installed

If your Windows NT 4.0 workstations already have Internet Explorer 5.01, and the System Files Update is not required (for example, you have Office 2000 SR-1 already installed), follow these steps.

NOTE: The following steps do not work if the System Files Update is already installed on the computer. In order to use these steps, you first must uninstall the System Files Update by using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

  1. Install the Tools from the Office XP Resource Kit.
  2. Start the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).
  3. In the Open the MSI File dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the Open dialog box, locate and select Osp.msi from the \Files\OSP\1033 folder on an Office XP administrative installation. Click Open.
  5. Click Next in the Open the MSI File dialog box.
  6. In the Open the MST dialog box, select Create a new MST file, and then click Next.
  7. In the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box, select Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, and then select Minimum in the Internet Explorer 5 upgrade mode list.NOTE: Even though you already have Internet Explorer 5.01 or later installed, it is necessary to select Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5 in this context in order to install the Windows Desktop Update.   8. Click Next.
