SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word template that is stored in an Outlook store, for example in a personal folder file, a public folder, or an Exchange mailbox, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot create file: Filename. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties in the shortcut menu to check permissions

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the path under the OutlookSecureTempFolder registry value points to a folder that does not exist or if the path is too long.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, edit the registry key value OutlookSecureTempFolder to point to the correct folder and, if necessary, to have a shorter path.

To edit the OutlookSecureTempFolder value to point to the correct folder:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate the OutlookSecureTempFolder value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\

  3. On the Edit menu, click String, type the correct path to the folder where the Word template is stored, and then click OK.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.

If correcting the path does not correct the behavior, move the Word template to a Temp folder that has a shorter path name:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate the OutlookSecureTempFolder value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\

  3. On the Edit menu, click String, type the path name for a Temp folder that has a shorter path, and then click OK.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
