"STOP 0x0000007B" with Unattended Setup Using the ExtendOemPartition Keyword and Installing the Loopback Adapter

SYMPTOMS

If you use the ExtendOemPartition option in an unattended Setup script and the script is also being used to install the Microsoft Loopback adapter, the computer may stop responding (hang) after the final reboot. When this occurs, the following error message is displayed on a blue screen:

STOP 0x0000007b

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the extended partition that is created during unattended Setup is marked to be reinstalled after the final reboot. When the computer restarts, the error occurs because the partition is not available to boot from.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

There are no known workarounds for this problem. You can repair a computer that has experienced this problem by booting from an MS-DOS boot disk or from a Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 Startup disk and then running the fdisk /mbr command. After you run this command, reboot the computer to cause the partitions to be re-created correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
