SYMPTOMS
When you try to run the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Setup program, the Setup program may stop responding, and you receive the following error message:
Additionally, the Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file may contain information that is similar to the following:

CAUSE
This problem occurs when the Setup program fails while checking the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) subsystem and there is a problem with the WMI or the Web-based enterprise management (WBEM) subsystem on the computer on which you are installing Exchange Server.

To verify that you are having WMI or WBEM problems, use one or both of the following methods.
Method 1
- Click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
- Ensure the Windows Management Instrumentation service is present. If it is not, there is a problem with this operating system.
Method 2
- Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Manage.
- Expand Services and Applications.
- Right-click WMI Control, and then click Properties. You should receive the following message:
