This article was previously published under Q294618

SYMPTOMS

When you receive a Microsoft Windows bitmap (.bmp) file as an inline image in Outlook 2001 for Mac that is sent by an Outlook for Windows user, the image area in the message appears as an outlined box filled with question marks (?), and you cannot open the image as an attachment.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, request that the Outlook for Windows user send the file as an attachment. You can save and open the attached file with a graphics viewer that handles the bitmap image. NOTE: This behavior has been observed since Microsoft Exchange client 4.0. In tests, the inline image that is sent to Outlook 2001 for Mac and then received on a Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 appears as a generic attachment with the filename, the Outlook.bmp file. If launched from the message, the bitmapped image opens in the QuickTime Picture Viewer. If you use an Exchange 2000 server, the image appears as described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
