SUMMARY

This article provides an alternative to the method given for migrating Exchange data in the Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 migration white paper. This article should be used in conjunction with the white paper to migrate Exchange data from an existing SBS 4.5 server to a new SBS 2000 computer for use in the same site and organization.

The Migration white paper is available in the CD1\Upgrade directory of the SBS 2000 CD media or in the DVD\CD1\Upgrade directory of the DVD media as Upmigrat.htm.

NOTE: Installing and running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 from the SBS 4.5 CD set on SBS 2000 is supported only for the purpose of migrating existing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 data to Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

The following is a summary of the steps that you have to perform to complete the migration of Exchange Server databases to SBS 2000 running on a new server. Details for steps 4 through 8 are listed below in the "More Information" section in this article.

  1. Install Microsoft Windows 2000 Server from the SBS 2000 media as instructed in the Migration white paper.
  2. During the data copy stage that is described in the white paper, instead of using Exmerge to export Exchange data, stop the Exchange services that are running on the existing SBS 4.5 server, and then copy the Priv.edb and the Pub.edb files from the Exchange Server 5.5 installation to the data directory on the new server.
  3. After all data that is described in the white paper is copied to the new server, install SBS 2000 as instructed, choosing an installation action of None for Exchange 2000 and its sub-components during the SBS 2000 Setup Component Selection.


NOTE: It is important to be sure that the computer name and NetBIOS name of the new SBS 2000 Server are the same as the SBS 4.5 Server that is being migrated.

  1. After SBS 2000 is installed on the new server and new user accounts are created according to the white paper, install Exchange 5.5 from the SBS 4.5 media.


NOTE: User accounts are created after installing SBS 2000 to the new computer. In this scenario, no version of Exchange is installed before creating user accounts, therefore, no mailboxes are created for the user accounts. This is normal and expected. Mailboxes are associated to users during the migration described in the "More Information" section in this article.

  1. Apply Exchange 5.5 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later.
  2. Configure Exchange 5.5 Server to use the databases that were copied during the data copy stage of the migration.
  3. Install the Active Directory Connector on the SBS 2000 server, and configure a Connection Agreement (CA).
  4. Run SBS 2000 Setup in Maintenance mode, and choose to upgrade Exchange.

Step 4 Details: Install Exchange 5.5 from the SBS 4.5 Media

Perform the following steps after installing SBS without Exchange 2000 on the new computer:

  1. If you chose to automatically log on during the SBS Setup process, log off, and then log on to the SBS 2000 computer.
  2. Insert CD 3 from the SBS 4.5 CD set.
  3. In Windows Explorer, go to the \ExchSrvr\SERVER\SETUP\I386 folder on CD 3, and then double-click to start Setup.exe. Click Run Program if you receive a message stating that "this program does not run correctly on this version of Windows."
  4. Install Exchange and use the complete or custom option as the installation type; do not install Microsoft Outlook Web Access or Books Online. This simplifies configuration and prevents unnecessary files from being copied during the migration.NOTE: You may need to perform the steps in the following article to allow Exchange 5.5 to install properly:

  5. Enter the CD Key from the back of the SBS 4.5 CD case.
  6. Accept the licensing agreement.
  7. Click Create a New Site, and be sure to use the same site and organization name as the SBS 4.5 Server from which you are migrating.
  8. Click Yes when prompted to create the new site.
  9. Type the site services account information. For simplicity, use the administrator account and password, and then click OK when the Rights summary is displayed.

Step 5 Details: Apply Exchange Service Pack 3 or Later

After successfully installing Exchange 5.5, apply Service Pack 3 or later. Exchange Service Pack 3 is included with the SBS 2000 media on the Service Packs CD or in the SP_CD1\EXCHSRVR55_SP3 directory of the DVD media. To do so:

  1. Set the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Service startup type to Disabled, and then stop the service:

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then point to Administrative Tools.
    2. Click Services, right-click WMI, and then click Stop.

    This allows the Exchange Service Pack installer to replace Exchange Performance Library .dll files during the update. If the Service Pack Installer is unable to replace files during the update, do not choose the option Ignore the file(s). Instead, refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Run Update.exe from the EXCHSRVR55_SP3\ENG\SERVER\SETUP\I386 directory.
  3. Set the WMI Service startup type to Automatic, and then start the service.

Step 6 Details: Configure Exchange 5.5 to Use Databases Copied During Data Copy Stage of Migration

  1. Stop the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Service (refer to step 1A in the "Step 5 Details" section in this article). Stop the additional Exchange Services as well when you are prompted to do so.
  2. Copy the Priv.edb and the Pub.edb files that were copied from the SBS 4.5 server to the \Exchsrvr\mdbdata directory of the SBS 2000 server. Choose to overwrite existing databases. Overwriting the existing databases should not delete any Exchange data provided that Exchange 5.5 has not yet been used on this server.
  3. Attempt to start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. The Information Store should fail to start, and then you should receive the message "Server Specific error code 1011 has been written to the event log." Click OK.
  4. Open a command prompt, and change directories to \exchsrvr\bin, and then type the following command:

    isinteg -patch

    The message "The Information Store Integrity Checker successfully updated the Information Store" is displayed.
  5. Close the command prompt, and restart the following Exchange services:

    Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent
    Microsoft Exchange Information Store

    Now start the following Exchange services:

    Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
    Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent
    Microsoft Exchange Information Store
    Microsoft Exchange Directory

  6. Change the Exchange LDAP port configuration:
    1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Administrator.
    2. Expand the list for the Exchange 5.5 Site.
    3. Expand the list for Configuration.
    4. Click Protocols.
    5. Double-click LDAP (Directory) Site Defaults in the details pane.
    6. On the General tab, set the port number to 390, and then click OK.
    7. Expand the list of servers, and then expand the list for the server name.
    8. Repeat steps d through f.
  7. Run the Consistency Adjuster to associate Mailbox data with users:
    1. Select the server name from the server list, and then on the File menu, click Properties.
    2. Click the Advanced tab.
    3. Click Consistency Adjuster.
    4. On the DS/IS Consistency Adjustment dialog box, click Synchronize with the directory, and create new directory entries under Operations, which is under Private Information Store.
    5. On the DS/IS Consistency Adjustment dialog box, click Synchronize with the directory, and reset the home server value for public folders under Operations, which is under Public Information Store.
    6. Click All inconsistencies under Filter, and then click OK.
    7. Click OK on the DS/IS warning message.
    8. Click OK when the Consistency Adjuster verifies that adjustments were made successfully.
    9. Click OK to close the Server Properties dialog box.
  8. Associate mailbox data with Windows 2000 user accounts:
    1. Click the Recipients container.
    2. Double-click the first recipient that you wish to associate with a user account that you created during the migration.
    3. On the General tab, click Primary Windows NT Account.
    4. Click Select an existing Windows NT account, and then click OK.
    5. Select the user account by double-clicking it from the list of names, and then click OK.
    6. Repeat steps b through e for each recipient that you will be associating with a user account created during the migration.
    7. Exit the Exchange Administrator when all Exchange recipients have been added to existing user accounts.

      NOTE: You may wish to test client functionality at this point: Log on to a client computer with a user account and access the user's Exchange mailbox by using their properly configured MAPI profile.

Step 7 Details: Install and Configure Active Directory Connector to Prepare for Exchange Upgrade

  1. Install the Active Directory Connector by running Setup.exe from the CD3\EXCHSRVR60\adc\i386 directory, and use the following steps to proceed through the wizard:
    1. Click Next at the Welcome screen, and then choose both items from the Component Selection screen. Click Next to continue.
    2. Click Next if you want to install in the default location, or choose an alternate location by typing in the path or selecting a folder using the Browse button.
    3. For simplicity, use the Server\Administrator account, and enter the password. Click Next to continue.
    4. Click Finish when the Active Directory Connector has been successfully installed.
    5. Stop and Restart the following Exchange Services:

      Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
      Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent
      Microsoft Exchange Information Store
      Microsoft Exchange Directory

  2. Configure the Active Directory Connection Agreement:
    1. Open the Active Directory Connection Manager: Click Start, point to Programs, click Microsoft Exchange, and then click Active Directory Connector.
    2. Right-click Active Directory Connector (server_name), click New, and then click Recipient Connection Agreement.
    3. On the General tab, type a meaningful name for this CA.
    4. On the General tab, click From Exchange to Windows under Replication Direction.
    5. On the Connections tab, type the computer name for this server in both the Windows Server information and Exchange Server Information boxes.
    6. On the Connections tab, click Modify for Windows Server Information, browse to select the Server\Administrator account, and then type the administrator password.
    7. On the Connections tab, click Modify for Exchange Server Information, browse to select the Server\Administrator account, and then type the administrator password.
    8. On the Connections tab, change the Exchange Server port number to 390.
    9. On the From Exchange tab, click Add next to Exchange recipients containers.
    10. Click the desired recipients that are listed below under Domain and Computer name. Click OK to continue.
    11. Click Modify next to Default destination, click Users, and then click OK.
    12. Click OK to create the CA. You may receive status notifications while the agreement is being configured. Accept each one by clicking OK or YES to complete the creation of the agreement.

Step 8 Details: Upgrade Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000

  1. Insert the SBS 2000 CD1 or DVD into the SBS 2000 Server drive, and click Set Up Small Business Server.
  2. Choices made during the installation of SBS 2000 should be pre-populated in the wizard. Click Next until the component Selection Screen is displayed.
  3. Change the Install action for Exchange 2000 to Upgrade, and then click Next. It may take a few moments for the install action item to change to "upgrade".
  4. Complete the SBS 2000 Installation Wizard.


NOTE: During the upgrade to Exchange 2000, you may be receive messages stating that certain files cannot be replaced. Do not choose to ignore the file copy. To work around this problem, stop the WMI Service, and then click Retry. As an alternative to stopping the WMI service, you can use the method described in the article Q246337, which is listed in the "Step 5 Details" section in this article.

  1. Close the To Do List at the end of Setup.
  2. Be sure the WMI Service startup type is set to Automatic.
  3. Restart the server.
