SYMPTOMS

When you edit the proxy enable options for Internet Explorer, all user accounts on that computer are effected and updated with those same changes. Note that this only occurs if the Windows Desktop Update is installed on the computer.

CAUSE

Due to a coding error, the wrong instance of the proxy enable parameters is being changed in the registry, causing all users to have this change incorporated into their Internet Explorer profile settings.

RESOLUTION

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer 5.01 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

This problem has been resolved for Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 or later in a recent security release. You can obtain the updated Shdoc401.dll file by installing the following Microsoft Security Cumulative Patch:
