SYMPTOMS
After you install Internet Explorer version 5.5 or Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a Windows 2000-based computer that is running Terminal Services, if the "Important URLs & Favorites and Links" Windows 2000 Group Policy is enabled, Index.dat files may not be deleted on the server when a user logs off from a Windows 2000 Terminal Services client, even though the "Delete cached roaming profiles" group policy is enabled. This problem does not occur in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.01 or if the "Important URLs & Favorites and Links" Windows 2000 Group Policy is not enabled.
Cached profile folders are created but are not completely deleted because three Index.dat files cannot be deleted in three different subfolders. Because of this, every time that a user logs on and off, new folders are created on the computer that is running Terminal Services in the user_name, user_name.000, user_name.001 format. This folder creation occurs for each user and quickly fills up the hard disk of the computer that is running Terminal Services.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if Wininet.dll is not unloaded by Shdocvw.dll in Internet Explorer 5.5.
RESOLUTION

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.5 Service Pack 2.
