XCCC: Conferencing Resources Are Difficult to Locate in the Exchange 5.5 Global Address List

SYMPTOMS

If you are an Exchange Server 5.5 user in an Exchange mixed-site with Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server, when you attempt to schedule a conference, it may be difficult to locate the desired conferencing resource in the 5.5 Global Address List (GAL).

CAUSE

In an Exchange 2000 environment, you can easily locate conferencing resources in the GAL by looking in the All Conferencing Resources Recipients container which is automatically created when you install Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server. However, when you configure Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server in a mixed-site, conferencing resources that have been replicated from the Windows 2000 Active Directory to the Exchange 5.5 Directory, only appear in the default Recipients container and may be difficult to identify among the other user objects in the Exchange Server 5.5 GAL.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, it is recommended to create a separate Recipients container on the Exchange Server 5.5-based server that is named "All Conferencing Resources" and then configure a two-way User Connection Agreement that will replicate Exchange 2000 conferencing resources specifically to that container.

The User Connection Agreement configuration for conferencing resources is required to be a two-way agreement to prevent the legacyDN in the Active Directory from being changed to the domain name on the Exchange Server 5.5-based server if the mailbox object replicates through another Connection Agreement back to Active Directory.

Creating a new Recipients Container in your Exchange 5.5 site makes it easier for Exchange Server 5.5 users to locate virtual conference rooms. In addition, by replicating the Exchange 2000 Server Schedule+ Free Busy system folder to the Exchange 5.5 site Exchange Server 5.5, users can perform direct booking of conferencing resources and allow free/busy information to be seen from client computers when scheduling online meetings from Outlook 2000 and later.

Create an All Conferencing Resources Recipients Container and Public Folder Replica

Start Exchange 5.5 Administrator, and then click the Site container.
On the File menu, click New Other, click Recipients Container, and then create a new recipients container called "All Conferencing Resources".
Click the Schedule+ Free Busy folder for your site in the following location:

myOrg\Folders\System Folders\Schedule+ Free Busy

Click the item under Schedule+ Free Busy, and then click Properties on the File menu.
On the Replicas tab, click the Exchange 2000 server that is listed under Servers, click Add, and then click OK.

Create a Two-Way User Connection Agreement

On the Start menu, click Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Connector.
Right-click Active Directory Connector, point to New, and then click Recipient Connection Agreement.
On the General tab, type the name of the Connection Agreement.
In the Replication Direction box, click the two-way option.
Click OK when you receive the message "The connection agreement must now write to the Exchange directory."
On the Connections tab, under Windows Servers information, click Modify, and then type the appropriate administrative account and password.
On the Connections tab, under Exchange Server information, click Modify, and then select the Exchange 5.5 Service Account in your Windows NT 4.0 domain. Use LDAP port 389.
On the From Exchange tab, click Add, and then type the Exchange 5.5 Service Account information.
In the Choose a container dialog box, click the All Conferencing Resources container, and then click OK.
Click Modify, and then click the Microsoft Exchange System Objects\Conferencing container.
On the From Windows tab, click Add, and then click the Microsoft Exchange System Objects\Conferencing container.
Click Modify, and then click the All Conferencing Resources container.
To force replication, right-click the two-way connector, and then click Replicate Now.
Start Exchange 5.5 Administrator, and then confirm the existence of the global calendar and conference resource mailboxes in the All Conferencing Resources container.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
