Article ID: 293660

Article Last Modified on 3/1/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q293660

SYMPTOMS

If you log on to terminal services with a roaming profile, your roaming profile is not copied from the server and you are viewed as new user to the terminal server. When you log off the terminal server, your terminal server profile is deleted from the terminal server. The following log may be recorded in the Application log file:

Event ID: 1000
Source: Userenv
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
%ComputerName%
Windows cannot create profile directory \\servername\users\username.
You will be logged on with a local profile only. Changes to the profile will not be propagated to the server. Contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - The network name cannot be found.

The following error is also logged because guest users cannot create directories on the terminal server:

Event ID: 1000
Source: Userenv
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
%ComputerName%
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a
temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

This note is logged in the Userenv.log file:

USERENV(56c.550) 15:25:41:171 RestoreUserProfile: User is a Guest

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because a new user is a member of the Domain Guest and Guest group on the terminal server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove yourself from all Guest groups, the Domain Guest and local Guest Group on the terminal server.
