SYMPTOMS

When a leading wildcard character such as an asterisk (*) is used to define a new Process Alias rule in Process Control, all processes will be matched, even if there is additional string information after the leading asterisk. This may cause the computer to become unstable or even stop responding (hang) because all the processing on the computer will be performed by a single processor even though other processors are available. The field in which this string is matched is titled Match String. You can find more information about this field in the Process Control Help file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

The error message that is displayed does not explicitly state that an asterisk cannot be used. Instead, it reads as follows:

The name can be up to 63 characters in length but cannot include leading or trailing spaces. Comma(,), double quote(""), and backslash(\) characters are not allowed.
