FIX: BizTalk Server Fails to Serialize Data with Embedded Nulls

SYMPTOMS

BizTalk Server Parser and Serializer components or Custom Parser and Serializer components may fail to serialize output. BizTalk Server may fail to serialize data into its native format, if the data contains embedded nulls. The document being processed by BizTalk Server is placed in the Suspended queue.

CAUSE

The BizTalk Server Transport Dictionary code that keeps track of the data in the document assumes that strings are null terminated and does not contain embedded nulls. When BizTalk Server attempts to check the Transport Dictionary or serialize the output into its native format, with embedded nulls, the action fails, and the document is placed in the Suspended queue.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

In addition to this fix, a registry key must also be added. Without the registry key, the BizTalk Transport Dictionary may not be persisted correctly.

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BTSSvc

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: PersistDocumentsAsI1
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Radix: Decimal
    Value data: 1

  4. Quit Registry Editor.
  5. Restart the BizTalk Messaging Service.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
