SYMPTOMS

When you click the Edit button in Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Program Not Found
Windows cannot find o4.exe.
This program is needed for opening files of type 'HTM File'

CAUSE

This issue can occur if there is corrupt registry information relating to Microsoft FrontPage 2000.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

  • Run the Detect and Repair tool for FrontPage 2000:
    1. Start Front Page 2000.
    2. Click Help, and then click Detect and Repair.
  • Fix the registry setting:
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FrontPage.Editor.Document.4.0\HTML Handler\shell\edit\command

    3. Double-click Default in the right pane.
    4. In the Value data box, type:

      "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\msohtmed.exe" /o4 %1

    5. Quit Registry Editor.
